Work on it Wednesday

Alrighty, so last week I told you I was planning a kitchen reno. Well, so far I've gotten my craft paints and counter top samples to use for inspiration. Since our cabinets are white I opted for a lighter looking inspiration stone. Today I'm going to practice my technique and pattern on a piece of leftover luan. Having never done something like this I want to be sure it looks good before I slap it on my counters. I have not purchased the envirotex yet, but I've found it online at Amazon and overstock. I'm hoping I can find it at JoAnn's and use a coupon to get it. I have one that's 50% off so that would be great. I realize that this is going to be an involved process and will probably take me awhile to execute. I'll be sure to keep you posted on my progress and of course let you see pictures of my finished project.

It helps to have a piece of granite/marble/laminate as an example. Then "all" you have to do is match it. Whatever color shows the most is your base color. Then pick your next lightest and start sponging it on and go up to your boldest color. Also, lots of different sponges are key to getting a truly randomized look. Change the sponge frequently even when you are doing the same color. Once you have your boldest color on, then step back and look at it. Is it close to your sample? Now go back and bring out a middle color again or two. Continue this until you get the look you want.

You don't have to work on a practice piece of luan. If you mess it up, you can always roll over the counter again with your base color and start over.

Also, don't sweat making all of the counter tops match exactly. Real stone varies drastically in one slab! Close is always good as long as your colors are the same from counter top to counter top.

Hope that helps some. I can't wait to see how yours turns out!
